V!VA Workout: Extended Arm Raises

One great exercise routine we use in our V!VAfit program is Extended Arm Raises with resistance bands. This exercise helps build muscle and endurance in your arms, which is helpful for picking up grandchildren or delivering hugs.

Stand on the resistance band with both feet (sitting or standing). Place your arms at your side arms extended, raise your arms up and out, lower your arms slowly and repeat 8 to 15 times.

If you don't have a resistance band, you can also use two full soup cans from your pantry! You can use bigger and heavier cans as you grow stronger.

Mississauga’s 90 year old icon, Mayor Hazel McCallion, and Ward 10 Councillor Sue McFadden were on hand yesterday to cut the ribbon to mark the official Grand Opening of Mississauga’s most innovative retirement destination - V!VA Mississauga.

Community leaders and enthusiastic guests gathered in the heart of the new retirement community to hear the Mayor and other guest speakers share their thoughts on the magnificent new property.

“We are here to celebrate a significant milestone in our company’s journey to revolutionize retirement living,” explained Eli Marder, President of V!VA Retirement Communities. “V!VA Mississauga is the culmination of years of planning, hard work and an unrelenting focus on our shared goal of ‘Making Today Great!’ for older adults and their families in Mississauga and across Ontario.”

During the afternoon’s celebrations, guests enjoyed an array of V!VAlicious refreshments prepared by V!VA Mississauga’s Culinary Team. Guests were also treated to live musical performances by a local artist, along with tours of amenity highlights, including the V!VAfit strength and stretch rooms, heated indoor saltwater pool, and the ever-popular Pints! Pub.

“V!VA is introducing a new concept in retirement living to help our Community Members embrace active living and discover a renewed sense of purpose,” said Michelle Chisholm, V!VA’s Director of Operations. “Yes, this building is beautifully designed with the latest amenities and services. But what really separates V!VA from other retirement homes is our wonderful team of dedicated people and their commitment to making everyday great for our Community Members.”

In honour of the opening, V!VA also donated $1000 to Trillium and Credit Valley Hospital Foundations to support education in geriatric care.

To book a tour of V!VA Mississauga, please call 905-566-4500.

V!VA Mississauga has been the hub of activity over the past couple of weeks as our new Team Members attended V!VA University, our comprehensive training program. It has been a fabulous two weeks of team building, education, getting to know one another and a GREAT start for us to truly create a place where people will live, love and laugh. Plus, we have all learned all about V!VA’s “Orange Dot Values” that make our retirement community so
special: being a friend, making it better, loving what we do, working as a team and above all having fun! We can’t wait to share our new skills with our new Community Members and their guests.

Our Team Members are truly excited about this new program and cannot wait to share their gifts, talents and enthusiasm with our Community Members, their families and the community at large.

V!VA Mt. Kilimanjaro

While everyone at V!VA consistently strives for ‘peak’ performance, it's not every day that one of us actually reaches the top of the highest mountain in Africa! Well, that's precisely what Donna Armstrong, a V!VA Mississauga Community Relations Coordinator, did last week when she climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro with her husband and four friends.

Mount Kilimanjaro is situated entirely with the borders of Tanzania, although it is situated close to the border of Kenya. It is situated 3 degree, or about 340 km, south of the Equator.

They tackled the Machame route which is regarded as the most scenic route on the mountain. It was completed in 6 days. With this route, climbers need to be prepared to put in a couple of taxing 10 hour pushes.

Kilimanjaro comprises three distinct non-active volcanic cones: Shira - 13,000 feet (3,962 meters) which Donna and her team climbed on Day 3; Mawenzi - 16,896 feet (5,149 meters) which they climbed on Day 4; and, the tallest, Kibo - 19,340 feet (5,895 meters) which they climbed on Day 5.

Statistics indicate that only 44% of those attempting to reach the summit (Kibo) actually make it. In Donna's group of six, all were successful in making it to the top!

Congratulations Donna! Thanks for inspiring everyone at V!VA to always reach for the top!
